(Contemporary Cities, NewYork, detail)Hoc gallery is pleased to announce the new exhibition “Contemporary cities” by Luca Leggero.
Contemporary cities is a project originally started in 2012 by Leggero, who is bringing it back to life and to galleries in next three months, during which the project will develop into a finalized, complete work of art.
Contemporary Cities contends with the same issues that many Web, Net and Media Artists are already facing, coping with what mankind has created through global connectivity, wandering through the servers around the world.
Leggero works on bright surfaces, using pictures captured with the Google Earth software as medium and, by showing all the layers, he prompts a reflection on the loss of identity of the maps of the most “civilized” cities and the clear absence of additional content in less developed areas of the world.
The work puts together a perspective of the map which sits between the visible and invisible (or augmented) reality, and, by eliminating the physical dimension, traces a new way of seeing the world: not political, not physical, but more and more about the raw contents.
Looking beyond the semantic aspect of the work, we witness the rise of a strong aesthetic theme, where the dominant features of contemporary visual education are discussed: while in the past geography used to be taught on paper maps, in the future it will be dealt with on pixeled screens.
Hoc gallery è lieta di presentarvi la nuova esposizione “Contemporary Cities” di Luca Leggero.
Contemporary cities è un progetto avviato da Leggero nel 2012 e che ora prende nuovamente vita portandolo in galleria per i prossimi tre mesi, nei quali si svilupperà e ne emergerà un opera definitiva.
Un lavoro che si innesta all’interno del discorso che tanti Web,Net e Media Artists stanno affrontando, misurandosi con ciò che l’uomo ha creato tramite l’uso della connettività globale, e che vaga tra i server di tutto il mondo.
I piani sui quali lavora Leggero sono chiari, utilizzando come medium le immagini catturate dal software Google Earth e
attivandone tutti i layers, l’artista intraprende una riflessione sulla perdita di identità della carta geografica delle città più “civilizzate” e la trasparente carenza di contenuti aggiuntivi nelle zone meno sviluppate del mondo.L’opera mette assieme una lettura della mappa tra realtà visibile ed invisibile( o aumentata), ed eliminando l’aspetto fisico, si può rintracciare un nuovo modo di vedere il mondo, né politico, né fisico ma sempre più contenutistico.
Lanciando lo sguardo oltre l’ordine semantico dell’opera vediamo emergere una valenza fortemente estetica, dove si mettono in luce i caratteri dominanti dell’educazione visuale contemporanea, poiché se prima si trattava la geografia scolastica sulla carta intelata,nel futuro sarà trattata sempre più sui pixel.
